FAQs

How can I become a PVEA member?

Go to our Join Page here, call us, or stop in to the PVEA base for a membership application. Fill it out and submit it by mail or drop it off.

Do you have to be a resident of the town of Penfield to join PVEA?

No! In fact we have members that live in all of our neighboring towns and some from the other side of Monroe County.

Do you have to be an EMT to join PVEA?

No! For those members that want to be on the road for us, within 6 months of membership we will have you registered for an EMT class. And we always need more help to run an agency… anyone with Human Resources, Accounting, I.T. Knowledge, etc. is encouraged to apply to assist us “behind the scenes”.

Do you still have volunteers?

Yes! From our “cleared” medics and drivers that are volunteers – they still participate anywhere from 20-30% of our calls monthly.

How long does the application process take?

As soon as you apply we will be in contact with you generally in 5-7 business days to get you in for a interview and to contact your references. And with enough lead time, we vote all new members in at the very next Board of Directors meeting. So generally, we have taken in a new member in as less than 2 weeks but at the longest in 4 weeks. Your application process includes reference checks, a background check, and an interview.

How long after I apply does it take to become involved?

A PVEA member will contact you once your application has been received and will keep you apprised regarding its status. You will also receive direction at that time regarding orientation.

Can you be a member of more than 1 Ambulance Corps?

Yes! Unlike our friends in the Volunteer Fire Service, you may be a member of multiple ambulance corps. With the Volunteer Fire Service being mentioned, roughly half or our members or employees also do volunteer with their local fire departments as well.

Can I become a member if I have physical limitations?

A physical statement is required from your doctor when you apply. However, you can volunteer as a dispatcher, which is not physically taxing in any way.

How many hours am I expected to volunteer?

12 hours per month is all we ask.

Do I need any medical training or experience to apply for membership in PVEA?

No. Although prior basic first aid or CPR training would be helpful to start the process with PVEA, all training can be obtained through our organization once you have been accepted as a member and have begun training as a volunteer.
